EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
